Speed Management | Driver Behaviour | Summer Offers

August 2023 Newsletter

For August we are focusing on Speed Management and how you can manage drivers, some advice on Driver Behaviour in our eBook and, as it’s summer, some pricing offers.

Even if you’re not yet a customer of ours we hope that you will find the information useful.

Speed Management

Schools are out, so the roads are quieter ( most of the time), and traffic flows quicker. It also means that speeding in built-up areas increases.

20 mph speed limits are rapidly replacing 30 mph limits as the new norm in many towns and cities. And figures show that this is being backed up by high levels of enforcement.

Almost a third of the population lives in towns and cities where the default speed limit is 20 mph or will soon be 20 mph.

We looked at a snapshot of our customers’ vehicles and compared the number of speeding events in 20 and 30 mph areas before and after the end of the school term.

The number of speeding events was up, especially in 20 mph areas.

This affects both your drivers and your business.

Drivers

In discussions with drivers when reviewing their driving styles there are a number of reasons why they are not complying with the 20 mph zones:

      • Wasn’t aware the speed limit had changed
      • When roads are quiet 20 mph is too slow
      • At 20 mph other cars are right up my rear
      • I’d be running behind schedule if I keep to below 20
      • Most cameras are not live so little chance of getting caught

What is the impact on your drivers?

The obvious one is points on their license and the cost of fines or attending speed awareness courses.

But many are not aware that their jobs are at risk if they get too many points on their license. Pretty obvious to many but the message is not getting through.

Effect on your Business

There are a number of areas where your drivers flouting the 20 mph limits will impact your business.

Let’s look at branding first. Many 20 mph zones are surrounding schools. Images of your branded vehicles speeding past the school gates are not the greatest advertising for your business.

What about the costs to you? Two main areas are increasing insurance costs if you have drivers with over 6 points and the cost of recruiting new drivers if they are banned due to points accumulation on their license.

Our Quick Tip

You may have Driver Apps that show a score for Driving Style or maybe give each driver a speeding report at the end of the month. Getting change this way is more hope than anything.

We’ve seen many a waste bin filled with speeding reports!

Try filtering the report just to show speeding events in 20 MPH zones and add some notes on how this will affect the drivers and the company.

Get them to focus their minds on reducing 20 mph speeding events first and then move on to higher speeding events.

Simple but effective and it works for the customers we work with.
